The specification does not change with the job. The ground is opened and proved, base goes in compacted in lifts, the slab is 4 to 6 inches against the load it carries, and the joints are sawn the day it is poured.

Reuben Castillo founded Arrowhead San Bernardino Concrete in 2017 after 19 years on concrete crews across the Inland Empire, from pre-war driveways off Mount Vernon Avenue to truck aprons near the rail yard. The C-8 license is held in his name and he lives in Del Rosa. He measures every estimate himself and is on site for every pour.

Local Knowledge
The oldest housing stock in the valley, ground that holds water close to the surface, and a hazard map the permit counter reads before we do: three things every estimate written here has to account for.
San Bernardino was settled in 1851 and incorporated in 1854, which makes it the oldest city we work in and gives it the oldest housing to match. The blocks around Mount Vernon Avenue and downtown hold a large share of homes built before 1940, and plenty still have the original drive: 4 inches of unreinforced concrete laid straight on native dirt. Del Rosa and the Base Line tracts are 1950s and 1960s, and Verdemont and Shandin Hills in the north went up between 1970 and 1999.
The valley floor sits over the Bunker Hill groundwater basin, where water has historically stood close to the surface under downtown, and the state Earthquake Zones of Required Investigation place much of that floor in a mapped liquefaction zone - the San Andreas runs along the foot of the mountains north of the city. Northwest of there it is Cajon and Lytle Creek wash: sand, gravel and rounded cobble that drains fast and hides soft seams. Your own lot is on the USDA Web Soil Survey.
Permits come from the Building & Safety Division at the City of San Bernardino, and anything at the curb, in the parkway or across the public walk takes an encroachment permit from Public Works as well. Where a slab goes under a habitable structure inside the mapped zone, the counter can ask for a geotechnical report first, and we say so at the estimate rather than after. We file what the job needs and meet the inspector.
Concrete wins on a San Bernardino frontage because it spans. The valley floor is soft ground under a thin crust, and a jointed slab carries across the soft spots that a flexible surface simply takes the shape of.

Asphalt is cheapest to lay and dearest to keep. Pavers cost most up front, but a settled patch lifts and resets in a morning. Concrete sits between the two, and spans.
Heat pulls water off the slab top while the concrete beneath is still gaining strength, and the surface tears as it shrinks. This city sits above 95 degrees most of July and August, so we pour before 8 AM and keep it wet for the 7-day cure the American Cement Association sets out.
It keeps moisture moving up into the concrete. Downtown sits over the Bunker Hill groundwater basin, where water has historically stood close to the surface, so an interior slab goes down on a sealed 15-mil retarder and floor covering waits on a moisture reading, not a date.
Much of the valley floor is mapped as one on the state hazard viewer: saturated sand that can lose strength in a strong quake. For a patio, a walk or a driveway it changes nothing at all. For a slab under a habitable structure it can mean a soils report before the permit is issued.
Because a century and a half of trenching and rebuilding leaves fill that was never compacted for a slab. Around Mount Vernon Avenue and downtown we probe it on the estimate visit rather than after the demolition, since how far down it runs sets the base under your new pour.
4 inches under feet and cars, 5 to 6 inches under trucks, RVs, or a garage floor that takes a jack. Thickness is the cheapest line on an estimate and the only one that cannot be put right later: an inch short cracks under ordinary use within a few years.
Inside your lot line, usually not - the city's exempt list names driveways and sidewalks under 30 inches, not patios. The curb, the parkway and the public walk take an encroachment permit, and a retaining wall over 4 feet takes a building permit from Building and Safety.

Thickness moves the figure before size does: each inch added to a 4-inch slab is another quarter of the concrete, and more base beneath it. After that it is how much old surface has to come out, how deep the loose ground runs, and the finish. All four are measured on a free on-site visit and written down.
Access. A back garden a mixer truck can reach is poured in a morning; one behind a 36-inch gate on an older downtown lot is barrowed, and that is labor before it is material. Slope is the other one, since a lot falling toward the house needs drainage designed in. Both are looked at on the visit.
4 inches under cars, and 5 to 6 inches where a truck, an RV or a loaded trailer parks - which in a freight town is more driveways than most. An inch short shows nothing for a year or two, then cracks under ordinary use, and no repair puts it back. The thickness is written on your estimate.
Almost every failure starts under the slab rather than in it. Compacted base spreads the wheel load and drains water off the underside; without it the concrete bridges soft spots until one gives way. On valley fill we dig deeper and compact in lifts, because compaction is only worth what the layer below can hold.
Because concrete shrinks as it cures and will crack somewhere - a sawn groove decides where. They go 2 to 3 feet apart for every inch of thickness, so a 4-inch slab is jointed at roughly 10 to 12 feet. Cut on the day, the crack lands in a line you chose instead of wandering across the surface.
It can, and which way depends where you stand. The valley floor is fine sand and silt with water close beneath it, and that settles under load. Northwest toward the Cajon wash it is cobble and gravel, draining well and hiding soft seams. The foothill lots carry more clay. We open the ground on the visit rather than read it off the street.
Late fall to early spring, when the afternoon stays under 90 degrees and the slab cures evenly. San Bernardino runs past 95 through July and August and clears 105 in a bad week. We pour through the summer anyway, starting before 8 AM and keeping the surface wet for the full seven days.
Yes, and more often than one on the coast. Concrete is porous, so oil off a parked truck and water both soak in and stain for good, and the ultraviolet load this far inland fades color and stamped work faster. Reseal every 2 to 3 years, sooner on a slab that takes full afternoon sun.
3 to 5 working days on site for most homes, plus the cure. On the older blocks the first two days are demolition and digging fill out, which is the part that varies; a tract lot in Verdemont reaches base faster. Foot traffic at 24 to 48 hours, cars at 7 days, anything heavy at 28.
Not usually, inside your own lot line - the city's own exempt list covers driveways and sidewalks not more than 30 inches above grade. It does not name patio slabs, so we ask rather than assume. The curb, the parkway and the driveway approach are right-of-way and need an encroachment permit; a retaining wall over 4 feet from the bottom of its footing needs a building permit from Building and Safety. We file them.

It does not cover staining, ordinary wear, or ground movement past what the joints are there to absorb - and a hairline that lands in a joint is the joint working.
